Carol’s Comments
                                         How’s Your Diet?

Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.  Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.  Philippians 4:8-9

Recently our Miniature Schnauzer, Ernie, was acting strangely.  Bob had fed him some of his organic cereal with cranberries that morning—rather let him finish it up.  Later I noticed that Ernie was acting oddly.  He was staggering around…seemed dizzy and his legs were weak. I wondered if the cranberries had made him sick.  I also wondered if perhaps he might have had a stroke or a heart attack.  He didn’t seem to be sick or in any pain, though.

We watched him a couple of days and he seemed to improve but not totally.  I decided to take him to the vet for a check up to see if he had indeed had a stroke or a heart attack.  “Was he dying?” I wondered.  The vet took a blood sample and then called me the next day to let me know the results.  Ernie is probably older than we thought he is, as he was a hand-me-down dog.  We were not clear about his age.  Some of the results indicated that his age might be catching up with him.  Also, he was a tad bit anemic.   He needed to be on a different dog food, as his dog food was not meeting his nutritional needs.  Older dogs, I learned, need a different diet.  We changed his food and now he seems to be his old self again.  What caused his difficulty we do not know.  How long he will have to live also unknown.

Now what does this have to do with anything?  Pondering the situation with our dog, I wonder if we really watch our spiritual diet…what we ingest into our body, mind, and soul.  All sorts of trash is on TV nowadays.  Morality seems to have fallen by the wayside.  Newspapers and magazines are no better.  Pornography is easily accessible.   Yet many of us don’t think about what we’re feeding our souls with this bombardment from the media.  We don’t realize how much it impacts our souls.

How many of us spend as much time watching TV as reading the scriptures or a spiritual book?  Or how many of us are faithful in attending worship, or spending time in prayer, or in service to others?  If truth be known, probably most of us would respond, “Not much.”

We are the gatekeepers to our body, mind, and spirit…what we feed into them.    Isn’t there a saying that says something like, “Trash in, trash out?”  One gets out what one puts in or allows to be fed into our mind, bodies, or heart.  Possibly we each need a spiritual check-up. We are reminded about what we feed our souls in the Philippians passage.  Our spiritual lives are just as important as our bodies and minds.  What we feed our souls impacts us in a way that we are either easily discouraged, fearful, and anxious; or we become peaceful, hopeful, grace-filled and forgiving.  Just maybe discouragement, fear, and anxiety make us a tad bit anemic in our spiritual lives.

Let us each take our spiritual temperature, as a vet, takes an animal’s temperature.  Then let us see where we come out.   Is our prayer life drawing us closer into relationship to God and neighbor?  Are we any more service-minded than we were a year ago?  Or are we anemic?  If we’re not more service-minded, perhaps a change in diet is called for.  Perhaps exploring other prayer disciplines would rejuvenate one’s prayer experience and deepen one’s relationship to God.  Sometimes we get stuck in one prayer discipline and asking God to show us where we are stuck or bogged down will lead us to be more open to God and others.  Perhaps coming together in Bible study and prayer groups would strengthen the bonds of love for one another and the world.  Perhaps prayer partners would help to hold us accountable.

We all need to grow in Christ, but we need to keep allowing ourselves to be fed by the Spirit, Scripture, prayer, and service to others.

So…how IS your diet?

Yours in Christ,
Pastor Carol M. Pfeiffer

From the Board Chair

In an effort to reduce our phone bill, we’ve recently gotten rid of all the extra features on our phone.  This in includes both Caller I.D. and Call Waiting.  So now at our house, if the phone rings and you want to know who it is, you have to answer the phone.  And if I’m waiting for somebody to call, then I can’t be surfing the internet at the same time.  I never realized how handy those features were.

But the same things that are great on my phone are lousy in my Christian walk.  How many times has God called me to do something and I put Him on “call waiting?”  “Yes, Lord, I’ll get to that as soon as I’m done with this thing.”  Or those times when God calls me to service and I’m waiting for the Caller I.D. to let me know if I really want to take the call.  What works great with G.T.E. causes static between my God and I.

I give you the same challenge I give to myself.  The next time God calls; just answer it.  And let us answer like Samuel did, “Here I am Lord.”

Don’t be content to leave God on hold.

Curtis Healton, Board Chair

Stewardship Thought
There is no probability of spiritual renewal in our culture unless our faith makes a real difference in the way in which we live.  Our faith becomes practical when it is expressed in two books:  the date book and the check book, money being the effective link between these two.

A Quiet Place Quote: No matter how quietly I speak, God hears. – Teresa of Avilla

"A Mother's Path of Life"

The young mother set her foot on the path of life.
"Is this the long way?" she asked. And the guide said:
"Yes, and the way is hard. And you will be old before you reach the end of it. But the end will be better than the beginning."

But the young mother was happy, and she would not believe
that anything could be better than these years. So she played with her children, and gathered flowers for them along the way, and bathed
them in the clear streams; and the sun shone on them, and the young Mother cried, "Nothing will ever be lovelier than this."

Then the night came, and the storm, and the path was dark,
and the children shook with fear and cold, and the mother
drew them close and covered them with her mantle, and the children said, "Mother, we are not afraid, for you are near, and no harm can come."

And the morning came, and there was a hill ahead, and the children climbed and grew weary, and the mother was weary.
But at all times she said to the children,
" A little patience and we are there."
So the children climbed, and when they reached the top they said, "Mother, we would not have done it without you."

And the mother, when she lay down at night looked up at the
stars and said, "This is a better day than the last,
for my children have learned fortitude in the face of hardness.
Yesterday I gave them courage. Today, I have given them strength."

And the next day came strange clouds which darkened the Earth,
clouds of war and hate and evil, and the children groped and stumbled, and the mother said: "Look up. Lift your eyes to the light."
And the children looked and saw above the clouds an
everlasting glory, and it guided them beyond the darkness.
And that night the Mother said, "This is the best day of all, for I have shown my children God."

And the days went on, and the weeks and the months and the years,
and the mother grew old and she was little and bent.
But her children were tall and strong, and walked with courage.
And when the way was rough, they lifted her, for she was
as light as a feather; and at last they came to a hill,
and beyond they could see a shining road and golden gates flung wide. And mother said: "I have reached the end of my journey.
And now I know the end is better than the beginning,
for my children can walk alone, and their children after them."

And the children said, "You will always walk with us,
Mother, even when you have gone through the gates."
And they stood and watched her as she went on alone,
and the gates closed after her. And they said:
"We cannot see her, but she is with us still.
A Mother like ours is more than a memory.
She is a living presence."

Your Mother is always with you.
She's the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street;
she's the smell of bleach in your freshly laundered socks;
she's the cool hand on your brow when you're not well.
Your Mother lives inside your laughter.
And she's crystallized in every tear drop.
She's the place you came from, your first home;
and she's the map you follow with every step you take.
She's your first love and your first heartbreak,
and nothing on earth can separate you..
Not time, not space...not even death!
